Expressive Enclosures: The Art of Personal Fences - May 16th, 2024- Tucson, AZ

$175.00

"Expressive Enclosures: The Art of Personal Fences" invites you to reimagine the ordinary and discover the profound in the seemingly mundane. In this class, we'll venture beyond the conventional understanding of fences and walls, exploring their multifaceted roles in our lives—be it as barriers, protectors, or symbols of definition. Through hands-on creation using an eclectic mix of materials such as wire, wood, brick, and tin cans, students will craft their own tangible expressions of personal boundaries. The class encourages participants to infuse their creations with significance by incorporating personal found objects or materials of sentimental value. As we delve into the artistic process, we'll ponder the necessity of fences in our lives and the stories they tell. Get ready to transform fragments into art and explore the deeper meanings behind the structures that shape our spaces and perceptions. Lunch included. (Class limited to 20 people.)

Power Figures- January 16th, 2022

This class will be aimed at creating power figures using wood, found objects, nails, rusted screws and pieces of metal, and other interesting materials. Each power figure will be an intimate and personal representation of the power aimed at protecting and empowering each student in their daily life. We will take our inspiration from a fascinating power figure called minkisi (from the Republic of Congo) which are wooden figures representing a human carved under the divine authority of a spiritual specialist who activates these figures through chants, prayers, and the preparation of sacred substances which are aimed at ‘curing’ physical, social or spiritual ailments.

All materials will be furnished; however, students are encouraged to bring personal items that are meaningful to them and can be used to give strength and endurance to their power figures along with creative interest and beauty.
